Overview
Originally a prosperous 13th-century Cistercian Abbey, and then home of the Grenville family, Buckland Abbey was sold to Sir Francis Drake in 1581, who lived there until his death in 1596. Several restored buildings house a fascinating exhibition about the Abbey's history. Among the exhibits is Drake's Drum, which is said to give warning of danger to England.
