Kents Cavern

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Probably the most important Palaeolithic site in Britain and recognised as one of the country's most significant archaeological areas. This extensive labyrinth of caverns was widely used by prehistoric people, and is the site of the discovery of Europe's oldest human fossil, a jawbone from 38,000 years ago. Cavern tours are guide led, and conclude in an underground exhibition chamber. There's lots more outside, including a woodland trail, a dig for kids, hands-on cave art walls, and regular appearances by Cavog the Caveman, in the school holidays. There is also a gift shop, a restaurant and relaxing gardens.
