RSPB Highnam Woods
Overview
This is a lovely remnant of ancient woodland, with a 2km nature trail passing amongst a variety of trees. Visit in spring to hear a symphony of birdsong, especially the nightingales which breed here, and to see bluebells and primroses in beautiful bloom. Other birds you may see include goshawks, ravens, lesser spotted woodpeckers, marsh tits, bullfinches, song thrushes, spotted flycatchers and woodcocks. In winter, you can see closeup views of woodland birds at the bird feeding station by the car park.
About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
