Dunkirk Mill Museum

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
If you’ve an interest in the industrial, this is great opportunity to see a massive working water wheel powering rare and historic textile machinery. The wheel – 12 feet wide and 13 feet in diameter – was installed in the mill in 1855. It’s quite a sight in action, as are the large working model pair of fulling stocks and other industrial-cloth making rarities. There’s no on-site public parking (except for disabled visitors), so drive to the car park behind Egypt Mill, just off the A46 on the edge of Nailsworth, and follow the cycle trail to the Mill Centre. It’s a lovely walk, too.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
