Romsey Abbey

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Romsey Abbey is a handsome Norman church built from 1120 to 1170, with a low, square tower, massive walls and an interior of beautifully carved Norman arches. After the Dissolution the church was purchased by the townspeople for the sum of £100. Today it is the biggest parish church in Hampshire. It contains two remarkable Saxon stone carvings from earlier churches on the site, and its treasures include the Romsey Psalter (a 15th-century illuminated manuscript), and a monument to the noted economist Sir William Petty (1623–87), born in Romsey, and a founder member of the Royal Society. Lord Mountbatten of Burma (1900–79), one-time confidant to Prince Charles, is buried in the abbey.
