In the heart of a traditionally farmed estate, surrounded by a moat and approached through a timber-framed gatehouse, Lower Brockhampton is a fascinating 600-year-old manor house. Until recently only a few of its rooms were open to visitors but now you can explore the whole house, the most impressive room being the cruck-framed Great Hall, with its stairs and gallery. The grounds are truly amazing – 687-hectares (1,700-acres) of farmland featuring rare breeds such as Hereford cattle and Ryeland sheep, ancient woodland, sculptures and a Lawn Pool. There is local produce on sale in the Old Apple Store tea-room, where you can settle down to a delicious cream tea, and the Granary shop sells gifts, award-winning preserves and home-reared beef from the Brockhampton Estate.
