Overview
Roads and a railway have cut into the castle site, but its huge banks and ditches remain impressive. The original motte-and-bailey was built after the Norman Conquest, and there is a later stone keep, once owned by the Black Prince, eldest son of King Edward III, where King John of France was imprisoned.
Features

  • Opening Times: Open all year, daily, summer 10-6; winter 10-4. Closed 25 Dec and 1 Jan

  • Facilities

Location
BERKHAMSTED, HP4 1HF
About the area
As Hertfordshire is so close to London, many of its towns have become commuter havens. St Albans, less than 19 miles (30km) from the capital, has retained its distinctive character, along with many historic remains.
