Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse

Overview
This abbey, founded in 1139 for a community of Augustinian canons, was reconstructed from the 1260s onwards, as its prestige and riches grew. The remains of a beautiful octagonal chapter-house are notably fine. Most impressive is the 14th-century gatehouse, recognised as one of the grandest in England.

Much of the fenland around the Wash has been drained of its marshes and reclaimed as highly productive farmland. Further north, the coastline, with its sandy beaches, has been developed to accommodate the holiday industry, with caravans, campsites and the usual seaside paraphernalia.
