The Wallace Collection

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Founded by the 1st Marquis of Hertford, the Wallace Collection was bequeathed to the nation in 1897 and came on public display three years later. This is one of the world's finest collections of art ever assembled by one family. The collection is shown in the family home, a tranquil oasis just a few minutes from Oxford Street. There are paintings by Titian, Canaletto, Rembrandt, Rubens, Hals, Fragonard, Velazquez, Gainsborough and many more. There is a very important collection of French porcelain and furniture, much of it of Royal providence, as well as amazing arms and armour, sculpture and Renaissance treasures. Many rooms have been recently restored creating wonderful intimate and opulent settings for the works of art. March 2012 saw the re-opening of the refurbished Dutch galleries. October 2012 sees the start of the Great Gallery refurbishment, with exhibits temporarily housed in other galleries.
