Great Yarmouth Row Houses & Greyfriars' Cloister

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Known as the Rows, these narrow passageways ran inland from the quayside and were lined with the homes of fishermen. Today, few of the 17th-century houses remain, but the Old Merchant’s House, owned by English Heritage, has been converted into a museum, and is open to the public. These houses are unique to Great Yarmouth. Guided walking tours explain how the rich and poor lived in these properties through history. The tours also visit the remains of a Franciscan friary, Greyfriars’ Cloister, which has some rare early wall-paintings.

About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
