Sheffield Cathedral

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
The city’s oldest building, Sheffield Cathedral dates back to medieval times. It is in Gothic style, with a Gothic Revival interior restored in Victorian times. Look up in the chancel to admire the gilded angels on the roof beams, which only gained their wings in 1966. Seek out the 16th-century monuments in the historic Shrewsbury Chapel, and the unusual memorial screen of bayonets and swords in the Chapel of St George. The bronze anchor memorial by sculptor Stephen Broadbent marks the links between the city and naval ships bearing its name. One of the building’s most striking features is its lantern and high ‘crown of thorns’, added to the west end in the 20th century as part of a move to lighten and brighten the interior.

About the area
Traditionally a steel and coal producing centre, the decline of both industries in South Yorkshire has been replaced to some extent by tourism based around the area’s beautiful Pennine countryside. The county claims part of the Peak District National Park, whose hills and dales provide welcome space for the large urban populations.
