Martello Towers

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
The area's Martello Towers date from around 1810, built to defend against a Napoleonic invasion. The largest, now converted into a holiday home, stands on Orford Ness shingle split, a short walk along Aldeburgh’s seafront. There's another at Bawdsey cliffs.
Location
Slaughden Road, ALDEBURGH, IP15 5NA
About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men.
