Claremont Landscape Garden

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Once a Dukes' retreat and a playground for princesses, Claremont was laid out by Sir John Vanbrugh and Charles Bridgeman before 1720, and extended and naturalised by William Kent and Capability Brown. This is one of the earliest surviving examples of an English Landscaped Garden. Today there are still many unique and unexpected features to discover, including the large turf amphitheatre, serpentine lake, grotto, Camellia Terrace and Belvedere Tower. Look out for the Thatched Cottage, a tiny refuge filled with period toys, games, picnic rugs and dressing up clothes. Seasonal and special events are always on offer. There is a children’s play area and a café offering a tempting array of freshly baked cakes and light lunches.

About the area

You’ll find sandy tracks, cottage gardens and welcoming village inns, and on the fringe of Greater London you can picnic in Chaldon’s hay meadows, explore the downs at Epsom, or drift idly beside the River Thames.
