Oakhurst Cottage (NT)

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
This simply furnished timber-framed cottage, in use for the last 400 years, has been restored and refurnished as a mid-19th-century farm labourer's dwelling, providing an amazing insight into the domestic life of the rural working classes of that period. Lived in constantly from the 16th century until the mid-1980s, Oakhurst Cottage shows how basic many people's living arrangements were, at the same time as revealing the beauty and workmanship of the unadorned wattle and daub walls, oak beams and wooden furniture. Outside is a delightful cottage garden filled with old-fashioned flowers, fruits, vegetables, and herbs that would have supplemented the table, a barn containing a collection of old tools used to work on the house and land, and a privy. Due to the age of the cottage and its small size, visits to Oakhurst are only possible as part of a pre-booked guided tour.

HAMBLEDON, GU8 4HF
About the area
Surrey is one of England’s most wooded counties, with over a quarter of the landscape designated as an official AONB and plenty of history evident in the countryside. You’ll find sandy tracks, cottage gardens and welcoming village inns, and on the fringe of Greater London you can picnic in Chaldon’s hay meadows, explore the downs at Epsom, or drift idly beside the River Thames.
