Overview
Abbey Assaroe was founded in the late 12th century by Cistercian monks from Boyle Abbey who excelled in water engineering and canalised the river to turn water wheels for mechanical power. Two restored 12th-century mills, one used as coffee shop and restaurant; the other houses a small museum related to the history of the Cistercians. There are interesting walks in the vicinity with views of the Erne Estuary and Atlantic Ocean.
