Portumna Castle & Gardens
Overview
This great semi-fortified house at Portumna was built before 1618 by Richard de Burgo, 4th Earl of Clanricarde. It was the main seat of this important Anglo-Norman family for over 200 years, until accidentally destroyed by fire in 1826. The ground floor of the house is open to the public and houses an exhibition on the restoration works and family history. The three formal gardens through the north entrance include the wonderfully restored 17th-century walled kitchen garden.
