Mount Usher Gardens
Overview
These 22-acre gardens were created and evolved for the Walpole family over 112 years and then were managed by Madeleine Jay for many years. The Vartry River runs through the gardens, and some 4,500 varieties of trees, shrubs and plants can be found there. The garden’s design was mainly influenced by famous Irish gardener, William Robinson who believed that perennial plants should blend in with the natural surroundings to create a beautiful setting. Visit in spring especially for the crocuses and magnolias; in summer for the rhododendrons and azaleas; and in the autumn for a blaze of colour including the Japanese maples and golden larches. There is a Tree Trail to explore and a café, bakery and shop.
About the area
The combination of a well-preserved monastic settlement with a beautiful lake and mountain setting makes Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains one of eastern Ireland’s premier attractions.
The reclusive St Kevin first established a monastic presence in this glacial valley in AD 570.
