Overview
The first Roman Catholic cathedral on this site was a makeshift affair constructed in 1886 of corrugated iron by the Marquis of Bute, to serve the scattered dioceses of Argyll and the Islands. With funds raised in the US, Canada and Ireland, a more permanent structure was started in 1932, and completed in 1953. This solid-looking, formidable granite building was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott. Notable features include the carving behind the altar, designed by Scott, and in the Lady Chapel.
