St Mary's Church

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
From the outside this historic church looks more like a whitewashed barn than a place of worship, but its simplicity and austerity is typical of pre-Reformation churches in Scotland. It dates to 1533, and was built for the Stewarts on the Grandtully Estate. In the mid-16th century some remodelling took place, including the addition of a barrelled, richly painted wooden ceiling, which remarkably survives, and is in striking contrast to the rest of the building. In curlicued roundels of fruit and flowers, saints, proverbs and Stewart family heraldry come to life.

About the area
Perth and Kinross, sheltered by the Grampian Mountains, is often regarded as the Heart of Scotland, and its mountains, lochs and glens yearn to be explored. Just outside the ancient city of Perth is Scone Palace, home of the mystical Stone of Destiny, on which 42 Scottish Kings were crowned.
