The Lake District is made for adventure. And, after a busy day of exploring the lakes and fells, there’s no better feeling than sinking into a comfy bed in a top-rated hotel.

But luxury doesn’t mean you have to leave your four-legged friends at home. We’ve selected eight of our favourite four- and five-star Lake District hotels where your dog is just as welcome as you are.

Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa, Bassenthwaite

With views over Bassenthwaite Lake, this impressive 17th-century mansion is set in 400 acres of deer park; part of the site is the Lake District Wildlife Park. The spa is an outstanding asset. Dogs are allowed in public areas, but not in the Main Hall during the day. There's a charge of £15 a night, while bedding and dog treats are on offer.

Forest Side, Grasmere

Located on the edge of Grasmere, Forest Side welcomes well-behaved dogs in six of their rooms. The hotel’s four-legged guests have the freedom to explore all 43 acres of woodland in their grounds and also receive a welcome pack – including a dog bed, two bowls, and a selection of treats – on arrival.

Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel & Restaurant, Windermere

Once the family home of Beatrix Potter, Lindeth Howe is set in landscaped grounds, with views across the valley and Lake Windermere. Dogs are allowed in bedrooms and the Hilltop Room but not the restaurant or lounges. A dog-walking service is available.

Langdale Chase, Windermere

This charming hotel enjoys a superb location on the edge of Lake Windermere. Dogs are permitted in a selection of their bedrooms at an additional charge of £15 per night – take in the stunning scenery from the lake view outdoor terrace, and enjoy delicious meals in the Baronial Hall and Piano Lounge.

Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel, Windermere

Once owned by Lord Lonsdale, first president of the AA, Holbeck Ghyll overlooks Lake Windermere. Dogs are welcome here, and there are special dog-friendly rooms. Although they can't access all the public areas, there is plenty of room to wander in the grounds.

North Lakes Hotel & Spa, Penrith

Expect modern comfort for both you and your dog with a stay at this luxurious Penrith hotel. There are three dog-friendly rooms available, where a cosy bed for your four-legged friend will be provided. The hotel also boasts a dedicated Pooch Paddock for your dog to explore and meet the other canine guests.

Rothay Manor Hotel, Ambleside

This warm and welcoming boutique Ambleside hotel has several dog-friendly accommodation options, ranging from classic rooms to luxury suites. Choose between the array of walks from the hotel’s doorstep before cleaning up in the dedicated dog-wash room – Ruff & Tumble dressing gowns are available for that added touch of comfort.

The Villa Levens Hotel, Levens

This striking Victorian hotel on the edge of the Lake District has a number of designated dog-friendly rooms, along with an area of the grounds that has been allocated especially for dog walking. Your canine friend is also welcome in the bar and lounge area for a relaxing evening in front of the fire.
