Rest and relaxation – from country house splendour to minimalist boutique chic

The UK boasts some of the finest spa facilities in the world and much of what we know about spas today, orginates with the Romans. They brought to Britain their thermae, large complexes for public bathing and relaxation. These had hot pools, cold pools, and steam rooms, as well as places where people could engage in sports and exercise. Modern British spas make much more use of technology, but there’s no doubt the ancient Romans would recognise them as part of their cultural legacy.

Here's a quick look at some of the best locations around the UK.

Rudding Park, North Yorkshire

Since opening in 2017, the new spa has proved a truly exceptional destination, with the fantastic Roof Top infinity pool offering a range of hydrotherapy and thermal experiences, the Escape Zone for treatments, a Nail and Beauty Studio, and Horto Café for healthy eating choices. You can also choose to have some treatments in the beautiful Roof Top gardens. It was named AA Spa Hotel of the Year in 2019.

The Balmoral, Edinburgh

This elegant Rocco Forte hotel enjoys fine views over Edinburgh and its castle. A contemporary Scottish style runs throughout the hotel, but the health spa sports a Roman theme.
