A loop at East Malling
Walk through the churchyard of St James the Great and then take the well-made tarmac path beyond. Go straight on, ignoring adjoining paths to right and left, following lines of windbreak poplars screening neat orchards. A metalled access road converges from your left (mind any research station traffic). Within a few hundred paces you will pass a 20mph sign. To your right you’ll see greenhouses and polytunnels.
When you see the EMR buildings ahead of you, turn right, off the vehicle route and follow the path through the middle of the complex, passing the conference centre to your right. Carry straight on past more orchards and windbreak trees for 400yds (366m) to reach a vehicle barrier and a ‘STOP’ sign, and emerge on Kiln Barn Road. Cross carefully and take the track directly opposite via offset rails, passing a new housing development. Shortly, past a green metal shed, leave the surfaced track and walk along a green footpath. Keep straight on, passing a path converging from the left, to reach a footbridge over the railway line to your right.
Cross this, then turn immediately hard right again, following the path along the opposite side of the railway, past a quarry site on your left. Continue along this green, tunnel-like path running high above the railway, taking a right-angled turn to your left in about 800yds (732m). Leaving the railway line behind, climb past grassy banks and badger setts. Knoxes Shaw Farm lies over the fields to your right. At the end of the path, take a couple of stiles, crossing an access track, then continue down a neatly hedged footpath beyond.
Cross the stile onto a metalled lane at the bottom of the path and turn right. Pass the well-kept premises of Kiln Barn Farm and bear right down Kiln Barn Road (a lane called Easterfields lies on your left). Carry on for a few paces past more houses, then take the signed footpath through offset rails to your left, between a beech hedge and a railed fence.
Walk along this grassy track, climbing gently past arable fields and horse pastures. There are extensive views from here. Walk past a cluster of buildings, bearing slightly right onto a tarmac path. Follow this past more modern housing to reach a metalled road.
Join this and walk straight on downhill past a mix of older houses, before turning right under the railway bridge, near East Malling Station. Follow the High Street downhill again to the crossroads at the King and Queen pub, turning right towards the church to return to the start.
