Bakewell
From the visitor centre on Bridge Street, in the middle of the town on the short one-way system, walk past the Queens Arms pub towards the River Wye. Go over the bridge and turn right on to Station Road. Follow this uphill all the way to the top. Where it bends left and levels out turn right, across a car park, to reach the old station building.
Join the Monsal Trail and turn left to walk along the former railway trackbed for about a mile (1.6km), around the outskirts of Bakewell, until you reach the cafe, bookshop and cycle hire centre at Hassop Station. Continue under the road bridge and after 350yds (320m) turn left on to a signposted public bridleway.  Â
Go through the gate and up the firm track. It continues across the hilltop, through more gates, and as it begins to descend towards Bakewell it becomes walled. Beyond a dew pond the route follows a clearly defined grassy slope down to woodland. Now follow a rough, stony path to finally reach the road at the bottom.
Go over the road to cross Holme Bridge, a narrow packhorse crossing, and past the old sheepwash on the far side. Turn left on to the pavement of the A6 into Bakewell. Turn right up Bagshaw Hill (no entry to vehicles) to climb steeply round a corner past Bagshaw Hall and up to a junction. Go straight across and walk along Cunningham Place to Old House Museum.
At the end of Cunningham Place, just beyond the museum, turn left down a ginnel (narrow walkway). At the end go right and then left to enter the top of the churchyard, with the town centre spread out below.Â
With the church on your left walk down through the churchyard and fork right to reach the bottom right hand corner. Leave by the gate and turn left on to South Church Street. Follow this round the sharp corner and then the short distance on to Rutland Square and Bakewell town centre.
