The car park at the start of this route is right by Benbecula's landfill site, but don't despair – things quickly improve. (Hen harriers and short-eared owls have even been seen rising above the small hill of Stiaraval, just across the road from the car park.) Cross a cattle grid and follow the gravel track east towards Ruabhal.

The track is clear and bends gently through heathland. On either side, but particularly the left, you can see peat cuttings, before the path comes close to the edge of loch Ba Una to your right.
