Weavers Way: Stalham to Potter Heigham
The Weavers’ Way heads east out of Stalham from the church along the road towards Hickling. It eventually turns right and then left, past Sutton Hall, and then takes the footpath to the right that leads to Sutton Mill.
The Weavers’ Way now continues along minor roads through Hickling Green and Hickling Heath, until finally leading round to the south side of Hickling Broad and becoming footpath again.
From Heigham Sound, the route takes a straight track southwest, almost parallel to the River Thurne. It crosses the A149 and turns left on to the minor road that leads into the bustle of shops and boatyards that surround the lovely old bridge at Potter Heigham, which probably dates from the late 14th century. Potter Heigham is the centre of a huge holiday industry that now threatens to engulf the Broads, and a good many of the 100,000 or so people who have their own boats keep or bring them here. Some 200,000 more people hire boats on the Broads for holiday cruises. The village itself was, since Roman times, the home of potters making beakers and urns from the local deposits of clay.
