West Highland Way: Crianlarich to Tyndrum
If staying in Crianlarich, there's a choice of paths out of the village . A very small one runs up from A82 at the western edge of the village, to emerge in the mildly cragged Bogle Glen just below the signpost on the West Highland Way. The Bogle or bogeyman (a 'tattie bogle' or 'potato monster' is a scarecrow) presumably lives in the tiny crag above the glen – which has currently no stream, and has to be a meltwater channel formed when rivers ran all over the place as the glaciers melted.
For those nervous of the bogeyman, the easier path starts opposite Crianlarich's railway station, from where it is waymarked as it dives under the new bypass into the forest. This plantation and the West Highland Way arrived here more or less together, so the path was created as the planting took place.
From the signpost near the edge of the trees (where the West Highland Way arrives from the south) the path runs up above Bogle Glen, with a good variety of tree species and enough breaks to enjoy the views.
The path crosses two burns by stout footbridges and becomes a small, gravel forest road. With the A82 heard below, turn left on a smaller path. It soon runs down beside a lively stream and under the railway line (the Oban branch) to the A82.
The A82 is crossed (with care) and a path squeezed in beside the road leads to the bridge over the Kirkton Burn and the lane to Kirkton Farm: one of two operated as experimental units by SRUC, Scotland's Rural College. As on all farmland, walkers with dogs are requested to keep them under close control or else on short leads here and at Auchtertyre Farm.
Turn left at the farm, on a track past St Fillan's Chapel to Auchtertyre, which has wigwam accommodation and a shop with very basic café. Its driveway leads back to the A82.
Having passed under A82 by a squeeze alongside the river, meander along beside River Fillan, not crossing White Bridge but continuing with the river beside you on your left. You pass a stone bench commemorating King Robert the Bruce's battle of 1306. Behind Dalrigh house, keep going past a ford of the river to cross a track bridge just beyond.
