Scarborough seafront

Scarborough can rightly claim to be one of the oldest seaside resorts in the country. Tourists first flocked to the town for its waters and, in many ways, not much has changed – its reputation as one of the North’s finest coastal resorts prevails to this day.

If you’re looking for a classic British seaside experience, it doesn’t get much more authentic than this charming town on Yorkshire’s east coast. Planning a visit? Don’t miss these AA- and VisitEngland-rated recommendations for your Scarborough Weekend Escape.

Things to do in Scarborough

Where else to start on your Scarborough escape than with a walk along the seafront? The town’s magnificent location on the stunning Yorkshire coast means that there are two award-winning beaches to choose from. Close to the town centre’s shops and eateries, South Bay is the most popular of the two. Quieter North Bay is a favourite with dog-owners, but watch out for canine restrictions in the summer months.

For unrivalled panoramic views over the town and out to sea, a visit to Scarborough Castle is a must. One of the North’s finest tourist attractions, the castle has stood proudly above the town for the best part of a thousand years.

North Bay Railway

Back in the town centre, another iconic Scarborough landmark is the striking Grand Hotel, which overlooks South Bay. Like many of the town’s buildings, the Hotel dates from the Victorian times and epitomises Scarborough’s prosperity during the busiest time in its long history.

Families will enjoy the miniature North Bay Railway, which runs between Peasholm Park and the Sea Life Sanctuary at Scalby Mills. There you can see a colourful Caribbean-style coral reef, with hundreds of fish, turtles and sharks. Culture lovers should also make a point of visiting one of Britain’s finest small arts venues, the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn keeps faith with local theatregoers by premiering most his acclaimed plays here before they make their West End debut.
