Things to do in St Davids

St Davids and its surrounding area is steeped in fascinating history. The Cathedral is home to the medieval shrine of St David, a focus for pilgrimage since the 12th century. This splendid building shares a quiet valley with St Davids Bishop’s Palace, the extensive and impressive ruins of the principal residence of the Bishops of St Davids which are well worth a visit.

From there, take a short stroll via Goat Street to Cross Square. The National Trust’s Visitor Centre and Shop are nestled here, opposite the 14th-century cross. This newly-refurnished centre is open all year and makes a brilliant base for exploring what Pembrokeshire has to offer. If you find yourself in the square on a Thursday morning, browse the outdoor market to discover fantastic local produce, gifts and crafts – perfect for sourcing special souvenirs.

RSPB Ramsey Island Nature Reserve

St Davids occupies one of the mainland Britain’s most westerly points and no visit would be complete without exploring St David’s Head, the dramatic headland accessible via the Pembrokeshire coast path from Whitesands Beach. Look out to the islands of Ramsey, Bishops and Clerks and you may be lucky enough to spot a pod of bottlenose dolphins – visit at sunset for the full wow factor.
