Changing the Windsor Castle Guard

If you’re looking for a picturesque getaway that’s steeped in history, it doesn’t get much better than Windsor.

With a royal residence, lots of leafy scenery and some of the UK’s best restaurants within easy reach, there’s plenty to ensure your break is a special one – here are our rated recommendations.

Things to do in Windsor

No visit to Windsor would be complete without exploring Windsor Castle. This mighty landmark is the world’s largest occupied castle and the official residence of Her Majesty The Queen. On your visit, keep an eye out for the Royal Standard flying from the battlements – this means that Her Majesty is in residence.

The magnificent State Apartments (open when the Queen isn’t in residence), Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and the Drawings Gallery are particular highlights, along with St George’s Chapel. The latter is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England and is often the setting for royal weddings. Plan your visit around the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place – weather permitting – at 11am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

If you enjoy a peaceful stroll, exploring the 4,800 acres of wooded parkland and magnificent landscaped gardens that make up Windsor Great Park will prove the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Stretching south from the castle, what was once a royal hunting ground is now an enormous nature reserve – enjoy one of the most famous views of Windsor Castle from the statue of the Copper Horse.

Windsor Great Park

When back in the centre, a twenty-minute walk to the other side of the Thames will see you discover Eton, home to one of the world’s most famous learning institutions. Join a public tour, available from April to August, to learn its fascinating history, including that of the College Chapel.

For a day of family fun, Windsor is of course renowned for being the home of the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort. The 55 interactive rides and attractions here bring the thrills thick and fast – for children and grown-ups alike!
