Creake AbbeyQuality Assessed
"Ruined abbey with a dramatic history of fire and plague."
Overview
The ruins of the church of an Augustinian abbey, built in the 13th century. In the late 15th century the abbey was swept by fire, although Richard III and others contributed funds to have it rebuilt. During this rebuilding, around 1506, the entire community of monks was wiped out by 'sweating sickness'. The abbey ended up in the ownership of Christ's College, Cambridge. A number of partial walls are still standing, many featuring impressive arches.
About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
