Exploring County Waterford

Waterford is a maritime county with a spectacular coastline and miles of safe, sandy beaches. Coastal attractions range from picturesque fishing villages to the more seaside resort pleasures of Tramore and the bustling port city of Waterford. To the west of the county is some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery, including some fine mountain passes.

The town of Waterford is the largest in the county and is also the county town. It is best known for Waterford Crystal, hand-blown cut glass, which is exported all over the world. Many visitors come to the factory to join the tours that show off the incredible amount of skill and technology that goes into the production of the glass products. While Waterford is a major commercial centre, it also has a proud history, with Viking remains to explore and fine Georgian houses to admire.

Lismore is a beautiful town on the banks of the River Blackwater. The town’s history if strongly linked to the church; from the 7th-century St Carthagh’s monastery, to the Cathedral named in his honour a thousand years later. One highlight of the Cathedral is a window in the south transept that was created by Edward Burne-Jones.
