"Great 16th-century find near coastal path"
Overview
During its time, this whitewashed, three-storey building has fulfilled many functions, not least as a smugglers' rendezvous – secret tunnel and all. The roof timbers are spars from a wreck (hence the name), while nautical artefacts recall its time as a chandlery. Assorted furnishings, open fires and dressed stone walls provide additional character in the warren of rooms, including the summer-only, ocean-facing seaview bistro. Up to six hand-pulled real ales, including those from the on-site microbrewery, are served in the three fire-warmed bars, as are Rattler Cornish cider and a few English wines. A seasonal bar menu features baked Cornish brie with ciabatta; Cornish mussels cooked in Driftwood beer with fennel; Thai green vegetable curry with basmati rice. Beer festivals are in mid March, early May and at the end of October.
