Castle Acre Priory

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
A castle mound was raised here by the Earls of Surrey in about ad 1080, and the first stone castle was added around the 11th century. Enormous earthworks were dug to protect it – great grassy ditches and ramparts swing around the castle, enclosing a sizeable portion of land. If you look carefully at the ground in the enclosure you might see the regular lines and grooves in the grass that are the foundations of former castle buildings.
