Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses (NT)
Overview
Below Kinver's mighty summit, houses are carved into the rock. These rock houses were permanently occupied throughout the 19th century. By 1861 there were as many as 11 families in residence, due to the employment created by the local ironworks. When this declined at the end of the 19th century, the houses were gradually abandoned, although two families remained living there until the end of World War II, and the last occupants moved out in1963. A tourist cafe lasted until 1967, after which the houses fell into decline. In the 1980s plans were made to renovate the houses, a task achieved with the help of postcards from 100 years earlier. The rebuilding was completed in 1993 and the site was again occupied, this time by a National Trust custodian. It's surprising how cosy the houses feel. The thick sandstone and fireplaces kept them warm in winter and cool in summer.
About the area
Staffordshire features lofty moors, deep dales and tremendous views of both. Further south are the six sprawling towns that make up Stoke-on-Trent, which historically have had such an impact on Staffordshire’s fortunes, not to mention its culture and countryside.
