Monks House (NT)
Overview
Virginia Woolf lived with her husband Leonard in this charming 17th-century weatherboarded cottage below the South Downs in the sleepy village of Rodmell. In the grounds, which include an orchard, lawns, kitchen garden and walled garden, is Virginia's famous writing room, the 'room of one's own' in which she wrote and slept. The house itself is filled with items reflecting the quirky taste of the couple and the writers and artists who visited, with many works of art by Virginia's sister, artist Vanessa Bell, who lived 5 miles away at Charleston Farmhouse with her husband, Duncan Grant. Virginia herself painted the interior walls in dramatic shades of blue, yellow, green and pomegranate and as she published more novels and became financially successful she made improvements such as rebuilding the kitchen and installing a bath, hot water, two new lavatories and electric fires in the chilly bedrooms. There's a shop selling Woolf-related items.
