Rosedene (NT)
Overview
This modest red-brick cottage remains almost exactly as it was when it was first occupied by early Chartists (a protest movement for political reform that existed in Britain in the mid-19th century). A visit to Rosedene, with its modest furnishings and two bedrooms, brings this time of far-reaching social and political change back to life, and is a real taste of another century. At the back of the cottage is a flourishing orchard and organic garden, full of seasonal crops, in which the original occupants of Rosedene would have cultivated fruit and vegetables to supplement their meagre diet and income. Admission is by guided tour only and booking is essential. Check the website for details. The cottage is also available as a holiday let.
About the area
Worcestershire is a county of rolling hills, save for the flat Vale of Evesham in the east and the prominent spine of the Malverns in the west. Nearly all of the land is worked in some way; arable farming predominates – oilseed rape, cereals and potatoes – but there are concentrated areas of specific land uses, such as market gardening and plum growing.
