The Hardmans House (NT)

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Described as a 'time capsule of post-war Liverpool', 59 Rodney Street is the home and workplace of renowned portrait and landscape photographer Edward Chambré Hardman and his wife Margaret. There are interesting contrasts between the cramped and cluttered private living quarters and the spacious public business rooms, where famous and ordinary people alike came to have their photographs taken. Located in Liverpool's elegant Georgian quarter, the Hardmans' House shows the couple's professional focus was on studio photography but their real love was for vivid landscapes, which they toured the country in pursuit of in their free time. The only example of an intact 20th-century photographic studio in Britain, the house and its vast collection of images offers a fascinating insight into what was a burgeoning business in the latter half of the last century.
