Southside House

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Southside House was built in the 17th century, and is currently by the Pennington Mellor Munthe families. Major Malcolm Munthe was a significant figure in the wartime activities of the SOE in Scandinavia and Italy. He opened Southside House to the public, and spent the last years of his life here. The house is in a William-and-Mary style and its many rooms have been maintained in traditional style without any major refurbishment. The furniture, objets d'art, paintings, and other items all belong to the family, and the rooms have a very intimate 'lived in' feel. The gardens are a mixture of wilderness and order, making for a delightful wander after the guided house tour.
