Overview
Douai Abbey is a working Benedictine monastery, founded in Paris in 1615 and established here in 1903. Until its closure in 1999, it was probably best known for its school. The abbey church dates to 1933, when a traditional Gothic building was started, but funds ran out and it was not completed until 1993, to a striking modern design by Michael Blee. Today it serves as the parish church, and is noted for its light interior and excellent acoustics.

About the area
Berkshire consists of two distinct parts: the western half, which is predominantly rural, with the Lambourn Downs spilling down to the River Lambourn and the Berkshire Downs to the majestic Thames, and the eastern half of Berkshire, which offers plenty of opportunity to get out and savour open spaces. Reading and Newbury are the county’s major towns, and the River Kennet flows through them both.
