Walsingham Abbey Grounds & Shirehall Museum

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
In the grounds of Walsingham Abbey are the spectacular ruins of the original Augustinian priory built here in the 1100s. At the entrance to the grounds is the Shirehall Museum housed in what was once a pilgrims’ hostel and then for 200 years a Georgian courthouse. Here, you can see displays on the history of Walsingham and many local artefacts, such as old photos, tools and religious items. The priory ruins and museum stand in 20 acres of tranquil and picturesque gardens, which are famous for their dramatic display of snowdrops in February, with access to woodland and river walks across the ancient parkland.

Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
