Mendip Hills (NT)
Overview
The Mendip Hills run east-west across Somerset from Frome to Brean Down. Inside they are hiding fascinating secrets such as underground caves and rivers, making the hills a popular centre for caving. From the outside they reveal centuries of history from the pre-historic at Cheddar, to the Iron-Age at Brent Knoll, and a Victorian fort at Brean Down. The hills are also a haven for wildlife, particularly if you are interested in butterflies and wild flowers.
About the area
Somerset remains rural and unspoiled, and ever popular areas to visit are the limestone and red sandstone Mendip Hills rising to over 1,000 feet, and by complete contrast, to the south and southwest, the flat landscape of the Somerset Levels. Another popular spot, the Quantocks, once the haunt of poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, are noted for their gentle slopes, heather-covered moorland expanses and red deer.
