A prize-winning walled town garden that makes the most of its secluded setting, Millgate House is often named as one of the north of England’s finest gardens. Terraced grounds divided into a series of fabulous ‘garden rooms’ replete with ferns, hostas, clematis, roses, green trees and small shrubs, run steeply down towards the River Swale. Layers of lush foliage open out into private, sunny oases, often with perfectly placed seating just where you need it most. The owners’ love of stylish plants and interesting leaf forms is evident throughout the garden, just a stone’s throw from Richmond’s cobbled town square. The garden comes attached to a really special B&B but you don’t have to stay the night to visit.
