Dr Jenner's House, Museum and Garden

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
At the risk of being morbid, you might never have been born if it wasn’t for Edward Jenner. This fine fellow pioneered a vaccine against smallpox in 1796, and this beautiful Queen Anne house was Jenner’s home. The house and the garden, with its thatched Temple of Vaccinia, are much as they were in his day. The displays record Jenner’s life as an 18th-century country doctor, his work on vaccination and his interest in natural history. You can discover the story of a man who changed the world in the house where history was made. Jenner is buried in the chancel of the church.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
