Along the Lauder Burn
From the car park, walk east along Market Place and turn right at the church to walk down Mill Wynd. Cross the bridge, then bear right at the fingerpost that points you along the Southern Upland Way.
The wide, grassy track now leads gently uphill, past a mobile phone mast and up to a gate. Go through the gate and continue ahead. The path is clear and firm underfoot and you're now walking with a golf course on your left and the deep gully of the Lauder Burn on your right. Soon pass a small copse on the left-hand side. Continue walking past the copse and maintain direction until you descend towards a ladder stile. Don't cross this stile but bear to the right, leaving the Southern Upland Way.
A narrow path here goes steeply downhill, bearing right to a tiny footbridge where a smaller burn joins the Lauder Burn from the south. Cross this and carry on along a fairly well defined route that works its way around the bracken-covered lower slopes of Staunchley Hill, with the Lauder Burn on your left and a line of electricity pylons on the opposite bank.
Bear right towards a small copse and keep it on your right until you reach a long, straight stone wall. Turn right and carry on parallel with the wall, past a patch of scrubby woodland on your right, until the wall meets another at right angles. As you descend, you have a fine view ahead of you of the town of Lauder, with the turrets of Thirlestane Castle beyond. There's a small wood in sight a short distance to your left
Go through a kissing gate here and turn right, following the path back towards the valley of the Lauder Burn. When you reach the stream, turn left and follow the footpath with the burn on your right, passing a small footbridge. Do not cross this, but carry on along a good firm track until you reach a modern housing estate on the outskirts of Lauder.
Turn left here on a clear footpath. Keeping the houses on your right, walk a short distance to return to the car park in the town centre.
