Exploring the Peak District

Covering almost the entirety of Derbyshire, there are really two Peak Districts – the limestone country of the White Peak in the south and centre of the district the Dark Peak of the north and South Yorkshire. The gentle, rolling limestone plateau of the White Peak features heavily-wooded dales, labyrinthine cave systems and pretty stone-built towns such as Bakewell and Youlgrave. In contrast, the Dark Peak’s limestone is capped by an impervious layer of millstone grit that in turn ensures peat bogs are common. It’s not all desolate moors though as there are plenty of pleasant towns such as Edale, Stanage Edge and Hathersage (all great bases for walkers).
