Exploring County Westmeath

One of the 12 provinces of Leinster, Westmeath is known for its lakes, waterways and rolling farmland. Lough Ree, part of the River Shannon and one of Ireland’s largest lakes, forms much of the county’s western border. Inchcleraun, an island on the lake, retains the ruins of an ancient monastery. Legend has it that it is also the site of the murder of Medb, Queen of Connacht, who was killed while she bathed, by a lump of cheese fired from a slingshot.

Athlone, Westmeath’s largest town, has long been a strategic crossing point on the River Shannon. Athlone Castle stands as a reminder of the town’s military importance and turbulent past. Nearby, the ruins of Fore Abbey reflect the county’s deep medieval roots, while ancient ring forts dot the countryside.

Westmeath is also synonymous with traditional Irish music and storytelling, particularly through the legacy of musicians like Joe Dolan (1939–2007), whose influence remains part of local identity. His career spanned more than 40 years, with regular hits all through that time.

Despite modern growth, Westmeath still offers a classically Irish welcome, and is well worth a visit.
