Overview
Fowlmere's reedbeds and pools are fed by natural chalk springs, and a chalk stream runs through the reserve. Special birds include kingfishers, water rails, and nine species of warblers, including sedge, reed and grasshopper warblers. Starlings, thrushes and buntings, including corn buntings, roost on the reserve in the winter. The nature trail is partly wheelchair and pushchair accessible, as are two of the three hides.

To the west of East Anglia is Cambridgeshire, a county best known as the home to the university that makes up the second half of ‘Oxbridge’ (the other half is Oxford). As well as its globally renowned educational credentials, it also has a rich natural history; much of its area is made up of reclaimed or untouched fens.
