Launceston Castle

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Built by Henry III’s brother Richard in 1227, Launceston Castle is a shell keep, a circular wall with buildings inside it. Richard later added to the castle with another tower and a fighting platform, making this castle the dominant building for miles around. It’s still fairly impressive today. Climb the battlements for impressive views, picnic on the grass around it or read up on its history in exhibitions inside. The castle has an impressive history not just as the fortress of the Earl of Cornwall but also as a prison in the 17th century where George Fox, founder of the Quakers, was imprisoned for eight months. Today the castle is the site of the summer music festival. Castle Rock, and the start of the Two Castles walking trail, linking it to Okehampton Castle.
