Docton Mill Gardens
Overview
Located in a pretty valley less than a mile from the rugged Devon coast, the gardens were established in the 1930s but fell into decline in the 1970s. In the 1980s the mill was renovated and a new bog garden was created. Following this, an extensive new planting programme added a magnolia garden with large herbaceous borders, a woodland garden and greenhouse area enabling full-scale plant propagation. In season, colourful displays of narcissi, primula, camellia, rhododendron, azalea and bluebells turn the woods into a riot of colour. In summer the garden is filled with the scent of roses. Docton Mill’s tea room is famous for its cream teas so don’t leave without trying one.
About the area
Devon sums up all that is best about the British landscape, with its magnificent coastlines, two historic cities, the world-famous Dartmoor National Park and south Devon’s glorious English Riviera. A fashionable and much-loved holiday destination, hiking and cycling in the National Parks is extremely popular among visitors, with a great choice of off-road routes.
