Pittville Pump Room and Museum
Overview
Cheltenham’s elegant signature building is the Pump Room (free admission), designed between 1825 and 1830 by local man John Forbes as a grand spa. Though the project ran out of cash before it could be fully realised, at least this centrepiece was finished. Inside, you can sample the (honking) spa waters from a marble fountain. The rooms are often used for concerts and recitals, and there’s a museum on the upper floor.
About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
